How Long Is The IOSH Managing Safely Valid For?

When does my IOSH Managing Safely Certificate expire?

The IOSH Managing Safely course is one of the world’s leading health and safety qualifications. It provides managers with the skills and knowledge that they need in order to understand their responsibilities in the workplace for managing health and safety.

The course covers the manager’s responsibilities for managing health and safety at work, how to assess and control risks, identify and understand hazards, and more. It is assessed with an examination and a risk assessment.

Once you have completed both assessments and obtained your IOSH Managing Safely certificate you may be surprised to see that there is no expiry date printed on the front of it. The IOSH Managing Safely qualification does not expire, but IOSH recommend that you renew your certificate every three years with an IOSH Managing Safely refresher course. This is because health and safety legislation, best practice and guidance changes over time.

What causes changes in health and safety?

On the whole, the health and safety industry is typically very quick to react to new scientific data, and distribute guidance relating to a hazard throughout the UK or across the world. Organisations such as the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) frequently publish new research and guidance based on evidence that they have found from this research.

A good example of how research and information travels throughout the health and safety industry is when in 2019 the International Agency for Research on Cancer identified welding fumes as a cause for lung cancer, and possible kidney cancer too. This then led the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to produce new guidance on how to control exposure to welding fumes, such as using Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) to draw the fumes away from the user of the welding equipment and into a vent. (More information on the topic of welding fumes and metalworking fluids can be found in this HSE video)

This is just a single example of how health and safety changes over time, and the IOSH Managing Safely Refresher course is specifically to help holders of an IOSH Managing Safely certificate to keep up to date on important health and safety topics.
