Why You Should “Zoom” To Our CITB Site Managers Safety Training Refresher

Construction By Rhiannon Davies

When it comes to delivering courses, face-to-face training in a classroom has been established as the biggest and best method of teaching. It allows learners to engage with each other and the tutor, ask questions when they come up, and take part in group discussions.

Online health and safety training courses have enjoyed a boost in popularity over the last few years as people search for ways to learn that can be done from the comfort of their own home, without the added stress of having to commute to a venue and organise overnight accommodation.

When the coronavirus pandemic surfaced, the way that we learn necessary skills had to be adapted to fit around it. Online classrooms quickly rose up as the ideal middle ground between face-to-face and e-learning software. Online training courses, delivered via specialised software like Zoom, means learners can benefit from the group discussions and tutor engagement that you find in face-to-face teaching, while the online learning element keeps learners safe in their own home.

CITB’s Site Managers’ Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTSR) is just one of the courses that ACT are providing via an online classroom.

When should I apply?

Although SMSTS certificates are valid for five years, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) recommends taking the refresher course every three years to make sure you are aware of the newest relevant legislation and have all the up to date knowledge for keeping yourself and your colleagues safe while on construction sites. If you currently hold a SMSTS qualification, it’s important to note that you need to complete the refresher course before your certificate expires, otherwise you need to complete the entire course again. Our Zoom course has been endorsed by the United Kingdom Contractors Group (UKCG) so it meets requirements for those working on any UKCG site.

What do I need?

The refresher course takes just two days compared to the five days for the original certificate, and our Zoom option means you can take the entire course from your own home, requiring just:

  • A Wi-fi connection
  • A laptop, computer or tablet
  • Webcam, speakers and a microphone – most people will use the ones built in to your device or you can use external USB/Bluetooth options, whichever you prefer.
  • A pen and paper to take notes

Much of the hospitality industry is still affected by the coronavirus pandemic, and so cutting out the need for travel and accommodation by staying at home not only helps keep you safe by helping you avoid large groups, it eliminates the hassle and cost that comes with it.

How do I get started?

Setting up for a Zoom course couldn’t be easier – when you confirm your place on the SMSTSR, you’ll receive detailed instructions containing everything you need to access the meeting. On the morning of the course, simply click on the link, enter the password you’ve been given, and a member of staff will greet you to run through any ‘housekeeping’ for the course, answer any questions and hand over to the tutor when everyone’s present.

If you have any questions or hesitations about attending a Zoom course or booking your colleagues on to one, and want to know more about it please contact us on actsales@actassociates.co.uk or on +44(0)1384 447915
