Taught over 5-days, the course is split into 4 separate modules:

Module 1 – Legal and management

  • Understand the purpose of legislation, and different legislative requirements
  • The Health & Safety at Work ACT (1974), legal duties of employers, self-employed and employees
  • Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Regulations
  • Health & Safety Management Systems
  • Risk Assessments and method statements
  • Inductions, communication, leadership and worker engagement
  • Inspections audits, accident prevention, reporting and investigation

Module 2 – Health and welfare

  • Implementing and sustaining good health planning and suitable welfare facilities including compliance with CDM regulations and best practice
  • Stress, mental health and a positive approach to managing mental health issues in construction
  • Awareness, management and support of individuals affected by drug and alcohol issues including legal frameworks
  • Control of substances hazardous to health, lead, asbestos, dust and fumes
  • Common risks to construction including noise, vibration, manual handling

Module 3 – General safety

  • Requirements for setting out a construction site
  • Fire prevention and control including safe handling and storage of dangerous substances
  • Electrical safety
  • Planning, managing and removing temporary works
