NEBOSH National General Certificate

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is highly recommended for Managers, Supervisors, and Team Leaders who are responsible for implementing and maintaining health and safety practices within their organisation. This qualification is relevant to workplaces across all industries and sectors.

It is an excellent qualification for individuals looking to start a career in health and safety, as well as for those already working in the field who wish to expand their knowledge and skills.

Many roles within the health and safety industry require a NEBOSH qualification as part of the job criteria.

No prior knowledge of health and safety is needed to take this course. The only prerequisite is a suitable standard of English language.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is split into two units both of which must be successfully completed to obtain the full certificate qualification, then 11 elements listed below:

Unit NG1: Management of health and safety

• Element 1: Why should we manage workplace health and safety
• Element 2: How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
• Element 3: Managing risk – understanding people and processes
• Element 4: Health and safety monitoring and measuring

Unit NG2: Risk assessment

• Element 5: Physical and psychological health
• Element 6: Musculoskeletal health
• Element 7: Chemical and biological agents
• Element 8: General workplace issues
• Element 9: Work equipment
• Element 10: Fire
• Element 11: Electricity

This qualification is split into two separately assessed units. The assessment for unit NG1 is a scenario-based open book/online assessment, and unit NG2 is a work-based risk assessment.

NG1:

Open book assessments provide learners with the opportunity to be assessed on their knowledge and how they apply it, while still maintaining work and family commitments. The NEBOSH National General Certificate NG1 unit exam provides learners with a 24-hour period to break the examination into smaller chunks. You are expected to properly plan, draft, amend and submit your online paper across this 24-hour period.

As part of the open book examination, you are able to use your notes, textbooks and the internet to research during the exam. This does not necessarily make the online exam any easier.

All learners are required to complete a short closing interview after the OBE exam has taken place. This interview is to ensure that learners completed their exam themselves, and is conducted by an ACT tutor over video conferencing software.

NG2:

The NG2 is a risk assessment practical submitted digitally. This practical is completed based on your workplace, and involves profiling and prioritising risks, inspecting the workplace, recognising a range of common hazards, evaluating risks, recommending further control measures and planning actions.

Both units must be successfully completed within 5 years to achieve the full NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate course takes approximately 108 hours of study to complete, it involves a minimum of 68 taught hours and approximately 40 hours of private study and background reading.

• When studying through classroom, in-house, or virtual classroom learning, the course is typically completed in 9 days. This intensive format allows for a more focused and immersive learning experience, where you can engage directly with expert tutors and fellow learners in a structured environment. This option is ideal for those who prefer a more condensed and interactive approach to studying.
• When studying through online eLearning, we recommend allocating between 100 and 115 hours of study time. This is typically completed within a 3 to 10 month period, depending on your personal pace and schedule.

Is the study book included?

The RMS Publishing Study Guide for the NEBOSH International General Certificate is an optional extra. The e-learning course contains everything that you need, but many learners choose to purchase a study book as a physical learning aid for their assessment, and employment after completing the course.
