Course FAQs

The course is aimed at individuals who have never done a risk assessment before, and will help them to develop a strategy of assessing risks that is not over the top, or lengthy.

The course is ideal for small business owners, employers, managers, workplace safety representatives and workers needing to complete or be involved in risk assessments.

There are no qualification-based requirements to taking this course.

This qualification will help you to:

  • Identify hazards and be aware of some of the resources that can help
  • Assess risks in low to medium risk premises using simple HSE tools
  • Evaluate risks in a proportionate and sensible manner
  • Identify suitable control measures

Employers who are looking to put staff onto this course will also gain a number of benefits from the skills that their employees will learn, including:

  • Creating a safe and healthy work environment
  • Having confidence as your employee will be trained in HSE’s current approach to health and safety risk management
  • Ensuring your organisation has valuable in-house risk management expertise
  • Upskilling your teams so they can carry out risk assessments in the right way and to the right standard

The one-day NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work consists of one unit, which is broken down into 3 elements:

Unit RAW1: Managing Risks in the Workplace

  • Element 1: Why manage health and safety risks
  • Element 2: Managing risk- Identifying and understanding the risks, and controlling the risks
  • Element 3: Managing risk- Sources of information and the application of HSE risk assessment tools

A practical assessment is completed at the end of this one-day qualification. You will be asked to watch a video of a real workplace and complete a risk assessment to identify how you would manage and prioritise the risks present.

The NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work takes approximately 7 hours of study to complete. This involves 6 hours of taught and 1 hour for the assessment.

  • When studying through classroom, in-house, or virtual classroom learning, the course is typically completed in a single day.

This course is supported by a NEBOSH Study Guide, which covers the course syllabus and content in detail.

It is not only helpful for learners studying the qualification, but also an invaluable reference source for those involved in managing workplace risks and undertaking risk assessments, as well as those who want to confidently identify sensible and proportionate precautions to control these risks.

The book contains practical activities, case studies and key terminology definitions. It can be used during a taught course or as a reference once studies are completed. Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work should help learners develop their understanding of the risk assessment process, as well as taking appropriate action when it comes to potential risks. NEBOSH hopes the book will also become a valuable reference source once the learner is back in the workplace.

The NEBOSH Study Guide is available as both a hardcopy and an e-book for all learners taking the course.

The NEBOSH one day courses are designed to give you an understanding of a single topic, such as risk assessment. After achieving the Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work course, you could move on to other one day courses such as the Incident Investigation, Managing Stress at Work, Environmental Awareness, or the Health and Safety Leadership. They are great bitesize courses to introduce you to each topic, which could then be further specialised in the Certificate or Diploma range.
