Case Study : Mitchell Lomas – NEBOSH National General Certificate
In our latest case study, we have caught up with Mitchell Lomas, who has recently completed his NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety with ACT. Mitchell began studying for his General Certificate in February 2024 with ACT’s classroom course in association with the ELCAS scheme.
Congratulations on passing the NEBOSH National General Certificate! Can you tell us a little about your current job role?
“At the moment I am working as part of the Royal Navy Recruitment promoting the Submarine Service to potential recruits. My profession in the Royal Navy is a Leading Engineering Technician, Marine Engineering on Vanguard Class Submarines. As part of the team responsible for the Maintenance and Operation of the Secondary Electrical Equipment and Systems on board”.
What is the best advice in your career, you have ever been given?
“Take the rough with the smooth. Times have been challenging, but everybody was in the same boat (literally). We managed to work together and get ourselves in the right position to get our Submarine to sea. Once back from sea, is the time to relax and recuperate and make up for the time spent away”.
You have successfully completed the NEBOSH National General Certificate, why did you choose this course?
“I chose this course because in Engineering safety is always paramount in my job at all levels. NEBOSH was an option as the Royal Navy are happy to have personnel qualifying in Health and Safety and I thought having the qualification would help me as part of my current job, and any other role in the future”
How have you found the ELCAS scheme beneficial?
“ELCAS has been helpful as they have contributed 80% towards my course fee. It is quite easy to apply for and it has helped me gain a worthwhile qualification. ELCAS isn’t always utilised as much as it should be by people whilst in service”.
Did you enjoy studying in a classroom? What were the benefits of it?
“For me, studying at home was always going to be difficult, I have a lively 4-year old and puppy so I needed to be in a classroom environment to give me more time to concentrate with no distractions from home and work, with other members of the course in-person rather than via e-learning. Fortunately, ACT were close to home so I was able to make it to and from the class without having to travel far”.
How did you approach revising for your NEBOSH National General Certificate exam?
“Before the exam I did my best to look through previous exams and classroom notes before the exam. Having all the HSE documents saved was useful to save time”.
Are there any challenges you have had to overcome while studying for this qualification?
“This was my first exam since 2019 so it was challenging getting my head around revising and preparing for an exam. However, by the time the exam came around I felt I was as ready as I could be”.
Finally, what do you hope to achieve in the next 5 years?
“In the next 5 years I will be looking for a career outside of the Royal Navy. I hope to complete a HNC in Electrical Engineering using ELCAS and trying my best to progress in a career field which is more suitable for my family life at home”.
