ACT student Marcus Pugh, who studied the NEBOSH Fire Certificate

The NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety (otherwise known as the NEBOSH Fire Certificate) is one of the most popular qualifications for anyone looking to build a career as a health and safety professional. It’s easy to see why – every workplace, from construction sites to corporate offices, need to have an awareness of fire hazards and how to manage them effectively. We spoke to recent NEBOSH Fire Certificate learner Marcus Pugh about his experience studying for this qualification on our February classroom course, and how he plans to use his new knowledge.

Why did you choose the NEBOSH Fire Certificate?

The health & safety qualifications I have achieved as a Trade Union Health and safety representative are useful in my workplace, but are not nationally or internationally recognised and do not support any future career decisions, whereas the NEBOSH are.

Why did you choose the classroom course over other learning methods?

I frequently undertake training as part of my professional development in the workplace and know from experience that I learn better in a classroom environment. I feel I can read the room and be much better engaged that when I undertake online learning.

What is your current job role and what does it involve?

I am employed as laboratory technician in a university, but, as mentioned above, I have the additional role of being a trade-union health and safety representative.

How do you plan to use your new knowledge in your day-to-day responsibilities within your role?

My role is varied. I frequently undertake workplace inspections and observe fire drills/emergency evacuations and will apply much of my learning to these areas.

What advice would you give others considering studying for their Fire Certificate?

Much like any form of studying, you will get out what you put in. Be prepared to work hard at achieving an internationally recognised certificate.

How did you approach preparing for your assessment?

Reading all the literature supplied in advance of the course was a great help. It outlined what to expect and it defines many words and phrases used by NEBOSH.

What were some of the challenges you faced in your studies?

Sitting the 24 hour examination was a challenge. However, I was fortunate enough to have the support of my line-management which removed any pressure of attempting the exam during working hours.

How did you approach the balance of your career, your studies, and your personal life?

As previously written, having the support of my line management made committing necessary time to the certificate much easier than it would have been otherwise.

Do you have any final thoughts to share on your journey?

I have no immediate plans, but having gained NEBOSH certification, I feel that when the opportunity arises, I have recognised certification which will open doors for me.
