What is Working at Height Awareness training?
Working at Height Awareness training introduces the risks, duties and basic control principles linked to tasks where a person could fall and be injured.
The course is intended to help learners recognise work-at-height activity, identify common hazards, understand role-based responsibilities and follow suitable planning and equipment-selection principles.
Who Should Attend the Course?
The course is intended for people who carry out, supervise or plan work where a fall could cause injury.
People who use ladders or stepladders
The course may suit workers who use ladders or other low-level access equipment as part of their job.
People working above ground level
The training may suit people carrying out tasks on raised surfaces, platforms or access equipment.
People working near edges or openings
The course may help workers recognise where an edge, opening or lower level creates a fall risk.
Supervisors

What is Classed as Working at Height?
Work at height means work in a place where a person could fall and suffer injury if suitable precautions were not in place.
It does not need to involve a roof, scaffold or tall structure. It may include:
- Using a ladder or stepladder
- Working from a stool or raised platform
- Working near an edge or opening
- Working beside a fragile surface
- Working where a fall from ground level into a lower place could occur
There is no simple minimum-height rule that applies to every task. The key issue is whether a fall could cause injury.
Is Working at Height Training a Legal Requirement?
Employers must manage work-at-height risks and provide suitable information, instruction and training for the work being carried out.
The law does not name one commercial course that every worker must complete. Training needs depend on the task, equipment, level of risk, worker experience and employer risk assessment.
ACT’s course may support foundation-level awareness. Higher-risk work may require practical instruction, equipment-led training or another recognised scheme.
