The New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991 ensures work on local authority roads, which are those up to 60mph on a single carriageway, or up to 40mph on a dual carriageway, in the UK are carried out to a safe and high standard. After successful completion of the course you will be awarded a certificate from the awarding body, from one of the following; CABWI, SQA, Lantra or City and Guilds. You will then be registered on the Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR), and you will receive your own SWQR ID card. Your certificate and card are valid for 5 years and will show the units you are qualified in to work on the roads.

The courses are led by one of our experienced and friendly trainers, generally through a combination of classroom learning and practical activities. You will then be required to complete assessments and a timed online exam for each unit.

  1. NRSWA Streetworks Operative
The NRSWA operative courses are for anyone who wants to undertake physical work on roads within the UK. Including excavation, backfill, reinstatement, signing, guarding and using tarmac and cold-lay materials. On every site there needs to be at least one qualified operative who is there at all times.
  2. NRSWA Streetworks Supervisor
The NRSWA supervisor courses are for anyone undertaking the supervisor role. A streetworks supervisor plans, monitors and supervises the streetworks operative and the works. The supervisor does not undertake any physical works. On every live site there must be at least one supervisor supervising the site, however they do not need to be there at all times and so can supervise a number of sites.

Please note: a person can have both the operative and supervisor qualifications which will allow them to work as the operative on one site and be the supervisor for another site. However, the same person cannot be operative and supervisor for the same site at the same time, it has to be two separate people. Previous experience of working on street works or on roads would assist the candidates but it is not essential.
