Ian Johnson, ACT's new construction tutorACT are proud to introduce the latest addition to our growning team – Ian Johnson TechIOSH/AssocIEMA/MRSPH/MIIRSM developed an interest in the health and safety industry while working as a HGV driver during the nineties. Since then, he has gained over 25 years worth of experience in the construction industry and is bringing his expertise to ACT to help us diversify our audit, training, and consultancy services even further.

How did you first become interested in construction and health and safety training?

I started to become interested in the construction industry when I started delivering to sites in the early 1990’s. At this time I was driving to the sites as a HGV driver and used to watch the  goings-on while waiting in the queue. I then had the opportunity to train some FLT operators out on site. This got me looking into the industry and found that there was a need for better quality training, and so I started working at being able to deliver the relevant courses, which I have been doing since 2000.

What courses do you deliver?

Construction Site Plant training is my area of speciality, including:

  • 180o & 360o Excavator
  • Rough Terrain Tele Handlers
  • Dumpers
  • Rollers
  • Skid Steer Loaders
  • Banksman

I  deliver NEBOSH Construction Certificate & Manual Handling Risk Assessments, the CITB SSP & ECITB suite of courses, Asbestos Awareness, NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations and Level 6 OH&S Management. I also deliver the DCPC and ADR Training for LGV drivers who carry dangerous goods to and from sites. They need to cover the 35 hours of training every 5 years to keep on driving.

How would you describe your teaching style?

I tend to be direct in my training, but offer plenty of health and safety examples of good practice relating to the changes I have seen and some incidents that have happened over my 46 years of work.

Why is safety so important to you?

I have seen the aftermath of Accidents & Incidents in the farming & construction industries and feel the need to keep working to try and reduce the stubbornly high number of injuries and fatalities that still plague these industries – especially in plant operations, confined spaces, working at height and lack of supervision/management skills.

How have you seen health and safety change in the construction industry over the years?

I have worked in the agricultural, logistics & construction industries most of my working life. From the age of 13 (back in 1980), I was just handed the key to the tractor and left to it – now slowly the message is starting to get across to these industries that health & safety ,including training, is of paramount importance. Contractors have taken it on board to insist on training that is relevant to reduce the accident rates in these industries.

Do you offer support beyond training?

Yes. ACT offer support through our consultancy services, we provide guidance on compliance, training requirements, risk assessments and best practice for construction, logistics & agricultural businesses who are now diversifying into construction.
